Dolphins in Malta
The waters around Malta's south coast are one of the Mediterranean's best areas for dolphin encounters. The combination of deep water channels, warm currents and abundant fish makes it a natural hunting ground and transit route for several species.
Bottlenose dolphins are the most commonly spotted — large, curious, and often willing to bow-ride alongside the boat. Common dolphins tend to travel in larger pods and are highly active at the surface, frequently leaping and surfing the wake.
Our routes are informed by years of local experience and knowledge of the seasonal patterns of the dolphin populations in this area.

Are there dolphins in Malta?
Yes. Malta's waters are home to several species of dolphin, most commonly the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis). Striped dolphins and Risso's dolphins are also occasionally spotted. The south coast of Malta around Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk is one of the best areas for sightings.
Is the dolphin watching tour guaranteed?
We run dedicated dolphin spotting routes based on known dolphin feeding and resting areas around the south coast. Sighting rates are high (over 85% of tours), but as these are wild animals in their natural habitat, sightings cannot be guaranteed. If no dolphins are spotted, we provide a partial credit toward a future booking.
How long does the dolphin watching tour last?
The standard dolphin spotting tour lasts approximately 3 hours. We cover a wide area of the south coast to maximise the chance of sightings, with additional sea cave and swimming stops included.
Is the dolphin tour suitable for children?
Yes — the dolphin watching tour is one of our most family-friendly activities. There are no age restrictions. The 28ft open boat provides a stable platform and there is no physical activity required. Children love the combination of dolphin spotting, sea caves and swimming.
What type of dolphins will we see in Malta?
Most commonly bottlenose dolphins, which are frequent in the deeper waters off Malta's south coast. Common dolphins are also regularly spotted, often in larger groups and more active at the surface. Striped dolphins and occasionally Risso's dolphins are spotted on longer routes.
What else is included in the dolphin tour?
The tour includes dolphin spotting, sea cave visits along the south coast, swimming and snorkelling stops in crystal-clear coves, and a guide commentary on the marine environment. Life jackets, snorkel gear rental, and safety equipment are included.
