See the Blue Grotto from the Water

The Blue Grotto is best experienced by boat — entering the caves directly rather than looking down from the cliff road. On our south coast tour, we pass through the main cave and stop for swimming in the vivid turquoise water at the entrance.

The iridescent blue and green colours come from the way sunlight reflects off the algae-covered cave floor. It's most intense in the morning when the sun hits the cave entrance directly.

Boat Tours Malta — FAQ

What boat tours are available in Malta?

Malta Explorers offers four guided boat tours: the South Coast Half-Day tour exploring the Blue Grotto coastline and sea caves, the Gozo & Comino Full Day private charter to the Blue Lagoon, the Grand Harbour Fiat 500 tour around Valletta, and the Fiat 500 Sunset Cruise. All depart from St Thomas Bay in Marsaskala.

What is the Blue Grotto in Malta?

The Blue Grotto is a series of sea caves on Malta's south coast. The cave walls and ceiling are studded with colorful sponges and coral, and the sea glows bright blue and green when sunlight enters. The best way to see it is by boat — going directly into the cave rather than from the cliffside viewpoint above.

What is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a shallow natural bay between the islands of Comino and Cominotto. The water is turquoise, crystal clear, and the perfect temperature for swimming — typically 24–26°C in summer. It's best visited by private boat early in the morning to avoid the crowds from the ferry.

How many people can join a boat tour?

The 28ft open boat can hold up to 12 passengers for guided tours. All tours can also be booked as private charters. Private tours are available for groups of any size — contact us to arrange.

Can I book a private boat tour for a group?

Yes — all our boat tours can be booked as private charters. Private bookings are available for groups of 2 to 12 passengers. Contact us directly via WhatsApp or the contact page to arrange a custom private tour.

Is the Blue Grotto always accessible by boat?

The caves are open to boat access most days in summer when the sea is calm. In rough conditions (typically winter and early spring), sea cave access may be limited. In summer (May–October) the Blue Grotto is almost always accessible, usually in the morning before the wind picks up.
