Kayaking at St Thomas Bay
St Thomas Bay in Marsaskala is one of the best places to kayak in Malta. The bay is naturally sheltered from the open sea, which keeps the water calm and ideal for beginners and families. The water is clear, warm (24–28°C in summer), and shallow near the shore.
From the bay, paddlers can explore the limestone rock formations along both sides of the coastline. There are small sea caves and arches accessible by kayak that you cannot reach from land or by larger boat. The snorkelling in this area is excellent — visibility up to 15m.
Kayak & SUP Malta — FAQ
Where can I rent a kayak in Malta?
Malta Explorers offers sea kayak and SUP rental at St Thomas Bay in Marsaskala — a sheltered, calm bay on the south-east coast of Malta. The bay is protected from open sea swells and is ideal for paddling.
Do I need experience to rent a kayak?
No experience is required. St Thomas Bay is a calm, sheltered bay with no currents, and sea kayaking is one of the easiest water activities to pick up. We show you the basics before you go. Most people are paddling confidently within 10 minutes.
What is the minimum age for kayaking in Malta?
Children aged 7 and over can paddle in a double kayak with an adult. Older children (12+) with some confidence can use a single kayak. SUP is recommended for ages 10+ with an adult nearby. All paddlers under 18 must be supervised by an adult.
How far can I paddle from St Thomas Bay?
You can paddle along the coastline in either direction. To the north, the coast leads toward Marsaxlokk Bay. To the south and west, there are small sea caves, limestone arches and rocky inlets accessible only by kayak or small boat. The bay itself is about 600m wide and provides a safe, sheltered paddling area.
What is the difference between a kayak and SUP?
A sea kayak is a sit-in boat paddled with a double-ended paddle. A SUP (stand-up paddleboard) is a wide, stable board that you stand or kneel on and paddle with a single long paddle. Both are great for exploring the coastline. SUP gives better visibility into the water — ideal when the sea is calm. Kayaks are faster and better in a light chop.
What's included in the kayak rental?
Kayak or SUP, paddle, life jacket, and a safety briefing are included. Waterproof bags are available on request. You can bring snorkel gear to use on swimming stops.
