Popeye Village in Malta: a guide to visiting the film-set village
In 1979 a whole wooden village was built in Anchor Bay, a cove in the north-west of Malta next to Mellieħa, to shoot “Popeye”, the 1980 film starring Robin Williams. When filming ended, the set stayed. Today it is a family theme park and one of the island's most popular visits.
Here is what's inside, what the ticket includes, how long you need and how to get there, with the operator's real details and no embellishment.
What you'll find
- •The village houses from the film: Popeye's house, the school, the fire station, the dentist's, the bakery… the original 1980s set.
- •The Popeye comic museum and a 15-minute documentary about the filming in the village cinema.
- •Animation shows all day and the chance to star in your own short film and attend its “premiere”.
- •A Maltese silver filigree demonstration and a 9-hole minigolf.
- •May to October: an inflatable obstacle course and bathing platform in the waters of Anchor Bay, a children's pool (up to 8 years), sunbeds, umbrellas and showers.
- •At Carnival, Easter, Halloween and Christmas the village is decorated with a special programme.
What the ticket includes
The entry ticket (from €15) gives access to every area and attraction and lets you enter at any time during opening hours, with priority skip-the-line entry. It includes parking, luggage storage, the village map (in English), the shows, the museum, the cinema, the filigree demonstration, the minigolf, popcorn and a postcard. It does not include hotel transfer or food and drink (available to buy, or bring your own).
How long you need and when to go
The ticket is valid all day. Without children, two or three hours are enough for the village, the museum and the documentary. With children, in summer, it's easy to spend half a day between the attractions and a swim in the cove; in high season it sells out easily, so book ahead.
Outside summer the park stays open all year: no swimming, but the village, the museum, the shows and fewer people. Bring a swimsuit and towel from May to October; drones are not allowed.
How to get to Anchor Bay
Popeye Village is in Anchor Bay, about 5 minutes by car from Mellieħa in the north-west of Malta. Parking is included with the ticket. By public transport, the nearest stop is on the Anchor Bay road itself; check the route from your accommodation in the Malta Public Transport app.
