Gozo by quad: route, stops and tips for three hours of island

Gozo is the second island of the Maltese archipelago: smaller, greener and far quieter than Malta. It's about 25 minutes by ferry from Ċirkewwa, at the northern tip of Malta, to the harbour of Mġarr. Because distances are short and the back roads are a pleasure, the most fun way to see all of it in little time is a quad.

The rental we book lasts three hours, with a 450cc CFMoto quad, helmets for rider and passenger, a storage box for your things and a GPS map of the island on your phone with the sights, beaches and a list of restaurants. Here's what awaits you and what's worth knowing beforehand.

The classic route in three hours

  • •Ta' Ċenċ cliffs (south): walls of more than 100 metres above the sea, the most impressive viewpoint on the island.
  • •Ramla Bay (north): Gozo's most famous red-sand beach, with dunes and shallow water.
  • •Ġgantija temples: UNESCO World Heritage, built around 3600 BC, older than Egypt's pyramids.
  • •Ta' Pinu basilica: Gozo's best-loved shrine, standing alone in the countryside with views over the whole west.
  • •The Blue Hole at Dwejra (west): the natural pool beside the former Azure Window; in summer, a swim is compulsory.

What's included and what's not

Included: the CFMoto 450 quad (deluxe version) for three hours, helmets for two, storage box, the GPS map on your phone, the safety briefing and limited third-party liability insurance. The passenger pays nothing extra and you can swap drivers whenever you like.

Not included: hotel pickup or a guide. And mind the deposit: €750 per quad by Visa or Mastercard (€450 from 1 October to 31 March), returned when the quad comes back in good condition. From €80.

How to get to the starting point

You collect the quad at the provider's garage in Xewkija, a few minutes from Mġarr harbour, where the ferry from Ċirkewwa arrives. From Malta the typical plan is: bus or car to Ċirkewwa, ferry (about 25 minutes), and from Mġarr a short taxi or bus to Xewkija. Start times show when you pick a date.

Tips that actually help

  • •Book the first morning slot in summer: less heat and less traffic on the northern roads.
  • •Bring sun cream, sunglasses and a swimsuit: there's a swim waiting on the route.
  • •The GPS map marks local cafés and restaurants; stop at one in Xagħra or Għarb rather than eating at the harbour.
  • •Check the provider's driving requirements when booking and keep the deposit card handy.
  • •You can reserve now and pay later; free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
