Christmas in Malta: Lights, Markets and New Year's Eve
Christmas in Malta is mild, lit up and very Catholic: typically 15–17 °C by day, around 10–11 °C at night, a crib in every church and shop window, and Valletta decorated from the last week of November to 31 December. New Year's Eve is a free open-air party in St George's Square with fireworks over the Grand Harbour at midnight.
This guide covers the Valletta lights and Fairyland, the traditions worth a detour, New Year's Eve and the way home, what to do beyond the capital, what closes on the holidays and what to pack. Our water sports from St Thomas Bay run April to October, so in December we are on land, in Valletta with everyone else.
What is Christmas in Malta like?
Mild and sociable. Days are typically 15–17 °C, nights around 10–11 °C and rarely below 10 °C; the sea is around 17 °C, swimming for the hardy only. Expect around a dozen rainy days, usually short heavy bursts rather than grey weeks. A sunny Christmas Day on a terrace is normal; so is a rainy one — pack for both.
Malta is a deeply Catholic island and Christmas is its biggest family feast: cribs in churches, shop windows and homes from early December, full parish churches for midnight mass on 24 December. Shops, cafés and restaurants trade through the month; the real shutdown is 25 December and 1 January. It is dark by about 17:00: outdoors in the morning, lights after dark.
Valletta Christmas lights, the tree and Fairyland
Christmas in the Capital is the Valletta Cultural Agency's official programme: lights on Republic Street and Merchants Street, the big tree in the Freedom Square / Pjazza Tritoni area by City Gate, nativity cribs and street performances, from the last week of November to 31 December; dates are announced each year.
- •Fairyland — the Christmas village around Pjazza Tritoni at the entrance to Valletta: stalls, food, rides and, in most years, a skating rink. It opens in late November or early December; dates and prices are announced each year.
- •Valletta Waterfront market — stalls and a large tree by the cruise port in December, most years; check the Waterfront's events page.
- •The lights on foot — Republic Street from City Gate to St George's Square after dark, back along Merchants Street.
Maltese Christmas traditions worth seeing
- •The presepju — the nativity crib, in churches, shop windows, balconies and living rooms from early December.
- •Mechanical crib exhibitions — villages stage displays of moving cribs, usually near the parish church; ask locally for hours.
- •Bethlehem f'Għajnsielem — a live nativity village in Għajnsielem on Gozo, open on December weekends; dates vary each year. The Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa takes about 25 minutes — check the timetable.
- •Midnight mass on 24 December — in Maltese parishes a child traditionally delivers the sermon, the Priedka tat-Tifel.
- •Qagħaq tal-għasel and imbuljuta tal-qastan — honey rings, and the hot chestnut-and-cocoa drink served after midnight mass.
New Year's Eve in Malta: St George's Square and the fireworks
The national New Year's Eve celebrations are in St George's Square, Valletta, free, from about 22:00 to 02:00, with live music and fireworks over the Grand Harbour at midnight. The line-up changes every year — see vca.gov.mt. Expect road closures around Valletta and a packed last ferry and bus; plan the return before you go.
Getting back: buses (a single ticket is about €2 in winter) and the Sliema–Valletta harbour ferry, a crossing of a few minutes — check both holiday timetables for the last departure; ride-hailing apps work, but with the roads around the capital closed, walk clear of the centre first. The Three Cities waterfront across the harbour faces the same fireworks, with a dinner table instead of a crowd.
Things to do in Malta at Christmas beyond Valletta

- •Popeye Village, Anchor Bay — open all year, tickets from €15, parking included; in winter the opening hours are shorter (roughly 09:30 to 16:30/17:00) and the sea activities and swimming platform are closed — they run May to October.
- •Malta National Aquarium, Qawra — the rainy-day plan: 51 tanks, more than 250 species and a walk-through tunnel in 1–2 hours, open all year, from €17.
- •Gozo quad with a GPS map — 3 hours from €80, all year, picked up in Xewkija; dress warm, it is open-air. Ferry foot passengers buy the return at Mġarr, about €4.65 adult and €1.15 child (3–12) — check timetable and fares.
- •Blue Grotto — the boats at Wied iż-Żurrieq run through winter, weather permitting, with shorter hours (roughly 09:00–16:00); the clifftop viewpoint is free all year.

- •Book early: Christmas lunch, New Year's Eve dinner and a bed in Valletta for 31 December go first.
- •What to wear: layers for 15–17 °C by day and 10–11 °C at night, a light waterproof for the short heavy showers, something windproof for the north-westerly (majjistral) days on the bastions and ferries, and shoes with grip on Valletta's stepped streets.
- •Timetables: buses run a reduced service on 25 December and 1 January; the Sliema–Valletta ferry and the Gozo ferries publish holiday timetables — check them the day before.
